The National Capital Authority (NCA) wishes to advise the community and Lake Burley Griffin (the Lake) recreational users that the Lake will be closed to swimming and full emersion activities. This follows advice from the ACT Environmental Protection Agency that the Queanbeyan Sewage Treatment Plant has gone into diversion mode, resulting in the heavy rainfall inflows exceeding normal operational capacity.
Warning signs have been erected around the Lake and sporting groups notified. The risk to human health is low due to a high dilution rate from recent rains, but precautionary measures are being undertaken. Further measures, including washing your skin with water and soap after contact is encouraged.
Currently, the duration of this closure is unknown but the NCA do expect to keep the Lake closed for approximately a week at this stage, ending 9 September 2016.
WHAT: Lake Burley Griffin closed to primary contact
WHERE: All of Lake Burley Griffin
WHEN: Saturday, 3 – 9 September 2016. Further closures to be advised.
