Celebrate our Bush Capital this Canberra Tree Week

Canberra Tree Week encourages Canberrans to explore, experience and celebrate the beautiful trees and forests of our National Capital through tree-themed activities for all ages.

Canberra Tree Week will be held from 1 to 7 May this year and is an annual event coordinated by the ACT Government to celebrate and promote the value of trees, and is supported by the Urban Tree Managers Network.

The Chief Executive of the National Capital Authority (NCA), Malcolm Snow, will launch Tree Week this year at the National Capital Exhibition at Regatta Point.

“Canberra Tree Week is an opportunity to highlight the important work of planting and maintaining trees on National Land in Canberra,” Mr Snow said.

“To celebrate the NCA will be giving away 200 eucalypts to members of the public and to ACT ParkCare community groups.”

“The tree give away will be at National Capital Exhibition (NCE) on Regatta Point from 12 noon on Monday 1 May, and will be on a first come basis.”

“We will also be giving packets of Golden Wattle seeds to a South Australian school group visiting the NCE,” Mr Snow said.

“This week is a great opportunity for all Canberrans to learn more about the environmental benefits of maintaining and sustaining our already impressive urban forests in the Bush Capital, forests which improve air quality, moderate urban temperatures and provide habitats for native animals.”

The trees that are part of the give-away are native to the region and include:

  • Blakely’s Red Gum, Eucalyptus blakelyi
  • Yellow Box, Eucalyptus melliodora
  • Red Box, Eucalyptus polyanthemos
  • Apple Box, Eucalyptus bridgesiana

The full list of Canberra Tree Week activities is available online

The launch will be held at the National Capital Exhibition at Regatta Point where members of the public and ParkCare groups can collect the seedlings.

Note: The South Australian school group is being provided with Golden Wattle seeds to comply with South Australian law, regarding the importation of soil and seeds into that state.
